The best free tools to find micro-influencers on Instagram in 2026
Start from a few accounts you already like and follow Instagram's own suggestions outward: that finds small creators no database lists. CollabScout, a free Chrome extension, does exactly that, then helps you message the ones you pick. If you'd rather search a database, Heepsy's free plan is the most generous one, at 500 results a month.
The short answer
| Tool | What's free | Smallest accounts | Messages creators for you | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CollabScout | All of it, no time limit | No minimum | Yes, from your account, each message previewed | Instagram only; after a quick first look, a few dozen new profiles a day |
| Heepsy, free plan | 500 results and 10 full profiles a month | Not stated | No; emailing starts at $69 a month | 10 full profiles a month runs out fast |
| Instagram itself | All of it | No minimum | No | Everything by hand, and you keep the spreadsheet |
| Meta's creator marketplace | Using it | Smallest filter is 0 to 10,000 followers | By hand, inside Instagram | Only creators who signed up, and only for eligible accounts |
| Trials of paid tools | 3 to 14 days, or a few credits | Varies | No | They end, and the plans start at $140 a month |
How I ranked them
Three questions, in this order:
- Can you keep using it without paying? A trial doesn't count.
- Does it reach small accounts? Most brands hunting for micro-influencers really want the person with 2,000 engaged followers in their town, and plenty of tools start well above that.
- How long until you're looking at someone worth messaging?
I also noted where each tool keeps your lists. The people you plan to contact are worth keeping to yourself.
1. CollabScout: best for small and local creators
CollabScout is the Chrome extension I build. It's free, there's no account to create, and it runs in your own browser while you're logged in to Instagram. It's coming to the Chrome Web Store soon.
You pick the kind of account you're after from 43 ready-made categories (food, fitness, tattoo artists, local trades, plants and gardens, and one for everyday people who aren't creators at all), then give it one to five example accounts. Most categories come with examples already, so you can start without knowing anyone.
From there it does what you would do by hand, only patiently. It opens each example, reads the accounts Instagram lists as similar, and checks every profile against your category: bio, name, links, recent captions and hashtags. Each match shows the words that made it a match, so you're never guessing why someone is on the list.
Timings, roughly: Instagram's suggestions for your examples usually appear within a minute or two, and about a dozen profiles are checked and rated in the first ten minutes. After that it slows down on purpose to a few dozen profiles a day, closer to how a person browses than how a scraper does.
Then comes the part none of the other free options do: messaging. You write one message, drop in each person's name, and add a few variations so the messages don't all read the same. You see exactly what each person will get before anything is sent, and a practice run goes through every step without sending. When you send for real, messages go out from your own account, one every 4 to 12 minutes and up to 20 a day by default. Afterwards you can see who got what, when, and from which account.
Already have a list? Upload a CSV or paste usernames and go straight to messaging. Extra columns in the file, like a discount code per person, can go into the message.
Where it falls short: Instagram only, and only in desktop browsers built on Chrome (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera). No emails, no audience demographics. And after the quick first look it's slow by design, so if you need 500 names by Friday, a database will serve you better.
Where your lists live: in your browser. There's no CollabScout server, so there's nothing for us to see or sell.
2. Heepsy's free plan: best free database
Heepsy is a searchable creator database covering Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn; it says it has 20M+ creators. The free plan gives you 500 search results a month, 10 advanced profiles, one project, and its AI, lookalike and text searches with 30+ filters.
That's plenty for sizing up a niche. The limit you're most likely to hit is the 10 advanced profiles a month.
Emailing creators from inside Heepsy starts on the Starter plan, which Heepsy lists at $69 a month billed yearly or $89 billed monthly, with 300 outreach emails a month. Its pricing page doesn't state a follower minimum.
Pick it if you want to search across several networks at once and can live with ten full profiles a month. More detail: Heepsy's free plan compared with CollabScout.
3. Instagram itself: free, slow, and where everyone's data comes from
Search, hashtags, and the suggestions Instagram shows when you tap the arrow next to Follow on a profile. It costs nothing and reaches every public account, whatever its size.
The catch is your time. You open profiles one by one, read bios, scroll posts, and keep track of who you've seen and who you've messaged. That works for ten creators. By fifty it's a chore.
This is the method CollabScout automates, so if you're doing it by hand today, it's the easiest switch: same source, no spreadsheet.
4. Meta's creator marketplace: the official route
Meta runs a creator marketplace for brands with eligible professional accounts. Its developer documentation shows how narrow it is: finding creators similar to ones you like only works with creators who have joined the marketplace, interests come from a fixed list of 20, and the smallest follower filter is 0 to 10,000, so there's no asking for "under 2,000".
It's the sanctioned way in, and the creators in it are there to hear from brands. But it only covers the ones who signed up, and not every account can use it.
5. Trials of paid tools: fine for one list, then they end
None of these is free for long, but each lets you look before you pay:
- Modash has a 14-day trial with no card: 20 profiles, 6 creator emails and 10 tracked creators. After that, Modash lists its Essentials plan at $199 a month. It says it has 380M+ creators, all with over 1,000 followers. (Modash compared with CollabScout.)
- influencers.club gives you 10 free credits and its Pro features when you sign up. Plans start at $140 a month. It says it covers 340M+ creators across 47 platforms, with verified emails.
- Lightreel has a 3-day free trial, then costs $199 a month, with a 7-day money-back period. It covers Instagram and TikTok and gives you creator emails.
- HypeAuditor doesn't publish prices; you book a demo. It says it tracks 227.3M+ creators and offers 35+ search filters.
A trial is the right call for a one-off campaign where you need emails or audience numbers quickly. For steady outreach to small accounts, the bills add up: Modash's Essentials plan is $2,388 paid yearly.
Which one should you use?
- Small or local creators you'll message on Instagram: CollabScout.
- A quick look at a niche across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube: Heepsy's free plan.
- Emails and audience numbers for one campaign this month: a Modash or influencers.club trial.
- Only creators who signed up to work with brands: Meta's creator marketplace.
- Ten creators and a free afternoon: Instagram itself.
They combine well, too. Build a list wherever you like, save it as a CSV, and upload it to CollabScout to send the messages from your own account.
Questions
What's the best free tool to find micro-influencers?
For Instagram, CollabScout: it's free with no time limit, has no follower minimum, and messages the creators you pick. For a free database that covers several networks, Heepsy's free plan, with 500 results a month.
What counts as a micro-influencer?
There's no official line. Most agencies call 10,000 to 100,000 followers "micro" and 1,000 to 10,000 "nano". For a small brand the better question is simpler: do this person's followers look like your customers?
Can free tools find creators with under 1,000 followers?
Instagram itself can, and so can CollabScout, which has no follower minimum. Many databases stop above that: Modash, for one, says its index covers creators with over 1,000 followers.
Is it safe to message creators with a tool?
Nothing makes it risk-free. Instagram limits accounts that send lots of similar messages quickly. CollabScout keeps a slow pace by default, one message every 4 to 12 minutes and 20 a day, shows you every message before it goes out, and pauses on its own if Instagram pushes back.
